First Brownie Award Recipient

December 9, 2007

I was very excited to present the first ever "Brownie" award to honor the memory of our friend, and fellow sweep, Chris Brown. I was particularly happy to see Brownie's dad (affectionately known as "Big Chris" in our neck of the woods) there to see the first recipient. I know he was very pleased that his son was so well remembered in our guild. The award was designed to celebrate creativity, independence, and perseverance in the areas of chimney sweeping and customer service; Three traits at which Brownie excelled during his many years on the rooftops. I received several excellent nominations (most of them well past the acceptance date, but I expected that). It seems everyone caught the spirit of the award. I read a few good "horror story" jobs, and a couple of nightmare customers.
Thanks to all of you who took a little time to email or snail mail your submissions. I want to see even more next year, so start thinking about those impossible jobs now! In the end, one entry clearly rose above all the others. Rich Rua's nomination of an accidental partial demolition of a chimney that turned into a stove sale had me chuckling and shaking my head. At the end of his letter, all I could think was "that's exactly what Brownie would have done".
Thanks again to all who submitted. This is your award to celebrate the difficult and challenging job we do every day. The Brownie' is your moment to shine and let everyone know just what a remarkable sweep you are. Let's see those nominations flying in.
See you next year!
